Following is the step-by-step process for applying designs and images to mugs through sublimation, making it easy even for beginners. Here, we have outlined how to sublimate mugs with Cricut Mug Press. This is what you have to do:

Step 1: Prepare Your Design

  • Open the design software of your choice (Canva, CorelDRAW, Adobe Photoshop, or any program you prefer).
  • Select the image you want to sublimate onto your mug.
  • Adjust the image dimensions to match the printable area on your mug.
  • Mirror the design before printing.
  • If you're sublimating multiple mugs, create a template with several images arranged on one sublimation sheet.

Step 2: Print the Image

  • Load the sublimation paper into your sublimation printer filled with dye-sublimation inks.
  • Print your design in high resolution.
  • Don’t worry if the print looks slightly lighter—colors will appear brighter after transfer.
  • Set the printed sheet aside to dry completely and avoid smudging.

Step 3: Prepare the Mug

  • Clean the sublimation mug thoroughly for the best print results.
  • Wipe it with isopropyl alcohol using a microfiber cloth to remove dust, oils, and residue.
  • Preheat the mug for a more consistent transfer.
  • Place it in the mug press for 30–40 seconds until it becomes slightly warm.
  • This step also helps remove any moisture from the surface.
  • Allow the mug to cool before applying the design.

Step 4: Apply Heat to Sublimate Mug

  • Trim the printed design around the edges to make application easier.
  • Position the design face down on the mug in your desired spot.
  • Secure it firmly using heat-resistant tape.
  • Make sure the paper is smooth with no creases, or the print may get distorted.
  • Place the mug in the Cricut Mug Press and apply heat at 180°C / 355°F for 180 seconds.
  • Use medium pressure for an even and clean transfer.

Step 5: Admire Your Remarkable Design!

  • Put on heat-resistant gloves before removing the mug from the heat press.
  • Take the mug out carefully once the time is complete.
  • Allow the mug to cool down fully.
  • Remove the heat-resistant tape and peel off the sublimation sheet.
  • Your mug is now beautifully sublimated and ready to admire!

Mug Sublimation Times and Temperatures

There are different poly-coated mugs available on the market that you can easily sublimate on, however, you should know the right temperature and time setting of the sublimation mug press to get a professional result. Here’s a table for your convenience:

Mug Material TemperatureTime
Ceramic 350°F to 400°F 180-240 seconds
Stainless Steel 360°F to 365°F 60-90 seconds
Polymer 375°F to 390°F 90-120 seconds
Glass 350°F to 400°F 180-240 seconds

How To Sublimate A Mug Without A Mug Press?

You can easily sublimate on mugs without a mug press using a convection oven, heat gun, or an air fryer. The process of printing and placing the sublimation design on the mug will be the same but when it comes to heating, here’s what you have to do:

1. Using Convection Oven

You can use a convection oven for sublimation and put multiple mugs in it. This is the method:

  • After pasting the design with heat-resistant tape, cover the mug with butcher paper and secure it with the tape as well.
  • Preheat the oven to 400° F. When it reaches this temperature, place the mug in the center of the oven.
  • Heat for at least 15 minutes. It's better to rotate the mug halfway through the heating process.
  • Take the mug out of the oven and let it cool down completely.
  • Remove the butcher paper and the sublimation sheet and you have transferred a beautiful design on the mug.

2. Using Heat Gun

  • Wear heat-resistant gloves.
  • After placing the design on the mug, apply heat with a heat gun at a low setting.
  • Do hold the gun close to the mug or the sublimation sheet will curl up and the design will be ruined.
  • The time duration will be much longer than that of a mug press or convection oven. Do it for 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Move the gun to and for over the whole design for even heat distribution.
  • Slowly remove the sheet after the mug has cooled down and you have transferred your eye-catching sublimation design.

3. Using Air Fryer

If you have an air fryer at home that you do not use for cooking, you can sublimate mugs in it. Here’s how:

  • Place your mug in the fryer with the design attached to it.
  • Heat it at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Wear heat-resistant gloves and take the mug out of the fryer after the time is up.
  • Let it cool down before removing the design sheet and you have successfully sublimated your mug.

Essential Tips For Sublimating Mugs

  • Before applying heat, make sure that your room is well-ventilated to dissipate fumes from the process.
  • Centralize your design on the mug as best as you can for accurate transfer. You may also want to avoid the top edge from where one drinks.
  • Follow the pressing time and temperature recommendation from the manufacturer for the best results.
  • Do not forget to wear heat-resistant gloves when handling the mug after heating.
  • Invest in a high-grade sublimation printer and paper for vibrant transfers.
  • Store sublimated mugs in a cool, dry place for long-lasting performance.
